2001 Players of the Year

FOOTBALL

Chris Davis, St. Petersburg Catholic: The senior quarterback ran for 990 yards, threw for 1,288 and was the most dangerous player in Pinellas County in leading his team to an 8-1 record.

VOLLEYBALL

Nicole Britenriker, East Lake: Led the Eagles to Class 5A state championship match, finishing with 292 kills, 100 blocks, 30 service aces and 177 digs.

BOYS CROSS COUNTRY

Kevin Lyons, Clearwater Central Catholic: The junior won six races this season and captured district and regional titles for the Marauders.

GIRLS CROSS COUNTRY

Melissa Kotchman, Indian Rocks Christian: Eighth-grader was ranked third all season and finished third at the Class A state meet after winning district and regional titles.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Chris Zumwalt, Clearwater Central Catholic: Led the Marauders to a 26-6 record, district title and Class 3A region semifinal, where they lost to eventual state champion Florida Air Academy. The 6-footer averaged 15.9 points, 6.5 assists, 3.0 steals and 3.5 rebounds per game.

Marcus Morrison, Lakewood: The high-flying forward averaged 20 points and guided the Spartans to within a game of the state semifinals.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Catherine Dupont, St. Petersburg Catholic: The 6-foot-3 senior averaged 20.4 points and 13.2 rebounds per game, both career highs, and led the Barons to a fourth consecutive district championship.

WRESTLING

Dominic DeNunzio, Countryside: Only a freshman, he battled through injuries and won district and regional titles and was the Class 2A state runner-up in the 112-pound class. DeNunzio lost to two-time state champion Guy Gibson of Fort Lauderdale St. Thomas Aquinas in the state final.

BOYS GOLF

Tim Sullivan, Palm Harbor University: Closed out prep career by winning district title and qualifying for state.

GIRLS GOLF

Brittany Lincicome, Seminole: Home-schooled sophomore fired 66 at districts, 70 at regionals, and at the two-day state tournament shot 75 and 70 to finish tied for sixth.

BOYS SOCCER

Paul Kolovos, Palm Harbor University: The Hurricanes' go-to guy for four years. Led PHU to 17-7-1 record while capping his prep career with 25 goals.

GIRLS SOCCER

Michelle Mione, Osceola: School's most prolific scorer, she scored 57 goals this season, breaking her own school record for a second time. She originally set the mark as a freshman with 31 goals. As a junior, she scored 47. Mione ended her career with 165 goals.

BASEBALL

Bobby Wilson, Seminole: Senior catcher was the rock on Warhawks' national title team with .457 batting average, 9 doubles, 5 home runs, 39 runs scored and 37 RBIs.

SOFTBALL

Crystal Crews, Countryside: The senior pitcher helped lead the Cougars to a No. 1 national ranking while compiling a 22-1 record, 0.24 ERA and .390 batting average.

GIRLS SWIMMING

Stephanie Margalis, Clearwater: The 6-foot-1 senior repeated as swimmer of the year after winning the 200 and 500 freestyle at the state championships.

BOYS SWIMMING

Jordan Raynovich, Northeast: Won twice at PCAC and City Championships. Had Pinellas' best night with two individual second-place finishes and two thirds in relays at the Class 2A state meet.

BOYS TRACK

Dermillo Wise, Lakewood: Best of a great group of county long jumpers. Won the Class 3A state title with a personal best of 24 feet, 73/4 inches -- the best mark of all competitors at the state meet in any classification. He also finished second in the triple jump (47-9), three-quarters of an inch away from first, and took third in the 100- and 300-meter hurdles.

GIRLS TRACK

Christa Benton, Keswick Christian: Cross-country champion also achieved personal bests in the 1,600 (5:15) and 3,200 (11:11) at the Class A state meet. But Benton was unable to defend her title in the 3,200, finishing second to Tallahassee Maclay's Kara Newell.

Sharneka Brown, Lakewood: Lone senior on Spartans team did it all, competing in five events at state and running on state-champion 4x400 relay team.
