Lightning may alter logo

ST. PAUL, Minn. -- The Lightning again is trying to find a new look.

After failing to come up with a third jersey last summer, Tampa Bay is considering changing for next season the primary logo and jersey it has had since its inception.

"We are considering some stuff we didn't see last year," spokesman Bill Wickett said.

He declined to describe the logo that has emerged as a favorite. Three jersey designs, which add red to the basic color scheme of black, white, blue and silver, are in the running.

Wickett said the logo's redesign involves more than just removing the words "Tampa Bay Lightning," which the team contends makes the logo awkward for T-shirts and baseball caps.

Of the proposed new logo, Wickett said, "It was cool."

The Lightning tried to come up with a jersey to enhance merchandise sales and distance itself from a disappointing past, as the Bucs did with their uniform change.

Not good enough for right wing Ben Clymer.

"I like the colors," he said. "I don't really want them to change."

Wickett said the uniforms may not.

"Anything can still happen," he said. "We could end up keeping what we've got and throwing another color into it."
