Fawn Ridge residents want to slow cars

Narrower lanes on major roads have been approved, but the project is deep on the county's long waiting list.

CITRUS PARK -- Speeders are still taking advantage of the wide open spaces leading up to Fawn Ridge, a 675-home development just southwest of Citrus Park Town Center.

And homeowners are still waiting for what they hope is the cure: New yellow stripes on Fawn Ridge Boulevard and Exposition Drive that will narrow the lanes.

"It's coming, although we're not the highest priority," said Shawn College, president of the Fawn Ridge Home Owners Association. "We are having a lot of residents asking for it. They want it and are anxious."

Last yearhomeowners, in an effort to slow motorists using the subdivision's two main drags, asked Hillsborough County to create 3.5-feet wide outside lanes and narrow the roads from 26 feet to 19.

The hold up is the county's long waiting list, which could prolong the project until February or later.

The project "has been approved and the work order has been sent," College said.

But the county "uses the same contractor the DOT uses and we're lower on the priority list for restripping."

Even as Fawn Ridge waits for restriping trucks to arrive, homeowners are considering other methods of traffic calming.

"I'm not completely confident the restriping will be the end-all be-all," College said.

Solutions such as speed humps and traffic tables are being considered. Traffic tables are slightly raised road surfaces, about the length of a car that "are aesthetically pleasing," College said.

"They can be made of brick, the curb can jut out so you can plant flowers or build archways and also serve as a place for pedestrians to cross," he said.
