Turkish musician to perform at USF

Esin Afsar emerged as a musical icon in the late '60s as one of the founders of Turkish pop. Known for works that include O Pencere, Kizim Benim, and Alagoz, she has performed all over the world and is sometimes called an ambassador because of her efforts to improve Greek-Turkish relations.

Her performance begins at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday at the USF Special Events Center, 4202 E Fowler Ave. Tickets are $5 for high school and college students, $15 for non-students and $3 for children 12 and younger. For information, call 546-3427.

Hot Flash! and Simple Gifts in concert

This double bill concert includes the local folk trio, Hot Flash!, comprising Rochelle Morris, Jan Milner and Linda Fackeldey. The band plays multiple instruments including the autoharp, lap dulcimer, banjo, mandolin, kazoo, percussion and guitar.

Milner and Fackeldey are past Florida Old Time Music Champions. Milner was champion in the lap dulcimer category and Fackeldey in vocal.

Simple Gifts borrowed its name from an old Shaker hymn. The band members include Ray Belanger, who has won championships with his hammer dulcimer, Cheryl Belanger, also a champion in vocal and autoharp, and Pete Scalzo on the upright bass.

They perform at 4 p.m. on Sunday at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Tampa, 11400 Morris Bridge Road. Tickets are $10 at the door. For information, call 218-3463.

Beauty and the Beast on big screen at IMAX

Disney's Beauty and the Beast will debut to a new generation when Walt Disney Pictures releases its Academy Award winning animated motion picture on the very big screen. This musical event includes enhanced images, backgrounds and special effects.

This run began Tuesday and will continue through May 20 at the IMAX Dome Theatre at the Museum of Science and Industry, 4801 E Fowler Ave. Tickets are $9.95 for adults, $8.95 for seniors, and $7.95 for children. For information, call 987-6000.

Three bands help Habitat with concert at Skipper's

Several bands will perform to support Habitat for Humanity, a well-known organization whose volunteers build and renovate homes for those who need help.

Molten Mike was exposed to New Orleans jazz and blues at an early age and plays blues with emotion. Also performing is the Mick Sharp band with more blues and classic-rock injected blues along with the Swinging Johnsons, playing jazz and blues with a little funk and Motown.

The show is at 6 p.m. on Saturday at Skipper's Smokehouse, 910 Skipper Road. Tickets are $5 in advance or $7 at the door. For information, call 971-0666.
