Piecemeal building of trail continues
By JACKIE RIPLEY, Times Staff Writer TOWN 'N COUNTRY -- Work on the Upper Tampa Bay Trail has been going on, piece by piece, for the past several years. And 2002 will be no different. Next in line for construction is a 4-mile segment along Channel A, from Linebaugh Avenue to Memorial Highway. "You can expect to see dirt being turned in June," said Charner Reese, principal planner with the Hillsborough County department of planning and growth management. The bulk of the project, which is expected to take a year, will be paid for with $3-million from the Community Investment Tax. Other parts of the trail scheduled for design work in the coming year include two bridges. The first will connect the trail to the new YMCA south of Waters Avenue. The second will provide passage for pedestrians and bicyclists over Channel A at Memorial Highway. The bridge also will connect the trail with the Pinehurst subdivision. Design work is scheduled to begin on the trail alignment from Peterson Road to Lutz-Lake Fern Road, a segment that will eventually connect the Upper Tampa Bay Trail to the 29-mile Suncoast Parkway Trail. "We really need to get started on that," Reese said. - Jackie Ripley can be reached at 269-5308. © 2006 • All Rights Reserved • St. Petersburg Times
