By ROD GIPSON Chiefs hold off Cowboys to win tournamentTAMPA -- It may have been closer than Chamberlain would have preferred but the Chiefs managed to come out on top of their Christmas Tournament, which wrapped up Dec. 29. The Chiefs opened up a 15-point lead late in the third period only to see Gaither storm back in the championship game. However, the Chiefs were able to hold off the Cowboys' rally and win 65-61. Otis White, Jo Jo Clermond and Willie Patrick combined for 46 points for Chamberlain while Gaither was led by Antonio Russell (19 points) and Brandon Harrison (29 points). Chamberlain topped Tampa Bay Tech and Blake to advance to the title game while Gaither defeated Leto and Hillsborough to set up the title match with the Chiefs. Patrick and White earned All-Tournament team honors, along with Harrison and Russell and Leto's John Abreu. * * * GIRLS BASKETBALL: Senior center Candice Dupree was her usual unstoppable self but Wharton still came up short, falling 56-50 to Bloomingdale in the championship game of the Beef O'Brady's Holiday Tournament at Armwood. Dupree averaged 26 points during three games as the Wildcats defeated Zephyrhills and Dunedin before falling to the Bulls. Dupree, who has signed with Temple University, had a tournament-best 34 points in the Wildcats' 78-65 semifinal win against Dunedin. In other tournament action, Gaither topped Leto 47-43 in the consolation final of the Lady Shark Tournament at Riverview. The Cowboys won two of three games during the tournament while the Falcons won their first game before dropping two. Also, Alonso participated in its first holiday tournament, falling 59-18 to Clearwater Central Catholic in the opening game of the Craig Keeler Tournament. FOOTBALL: Chamberlain standout defensive lineman Broderick Bunkley had four tackles (three for losses) to help the Florida All-Stars to a 40-13 victory against the Georgia All-Stars in the Florida-Georgia High School All Star game Dec. 28 at the Georgia Dome in Atlanta. Bunkley's Chamberlain teammate, linebacker Oliver Hoyte, also played in the game, as did Leto offensive lineman Gilbert Perez. ALUMNI: The New Year's Day Outback Bowl at Raymond James Stadium was a personal showcase for three former northern Hillsborough football players. Former Gaither standout Lydell Ross, former Leto star Michael Jenkins and former Chamberlain player Kevin House each participated in the game. House, a senior defensive back, had three tackles for South Carolina in the Gamecocks' 31-28 win against Ohio State. Ross, a freshman running back for the Buckeyes, had one carry for 13 yards in his bowl game debut. But Jenkins, a sophomore wide receiver, had the best day among the Tampa natives, leading the Buckeyes with eight receptions for 152 yards. Jenkins' yardage total set a new Outback Bowl record. Former Leto running back Ricky Sailor also got in on the bowl action. Now a junior defensive back with Texas Tech, Sailor recorded three tackles for the Red Raiders, who fell 19-16 to Iowa in the Alamo Bowl Dec. 28.
