Dupay probe nets charges

GAINESVILLE -- The investigation of a Florida player providing inside information to gamblers revealed a betting ring, and six people have been charged with felony gambling, authorities said.

Another 25 face minor betting charges as a result of the probe, University Police spokesman Joe Sharkey said.

Sharkey said the probe was not directly linked to the Teddy Dupay case.

Dupay was declared ineligible in early September after he was listed as an uncharged co-defendant in a gambling investigation by school police.

"It is a separate investigation based on information we picked up while working that case," Sharkey said.

Authorities said Ralph P. Chick, 48, of Gainesville, took bets on college and professional baseball and football.

Chick and five others were charged with racketeering, bookmaking and criminal conspiracy, and 25 face misdemeanor gambling charges.

JACKSON STATE: Seven players facing sexual assault charges were academically reinstated but remain suspended from the team.

SOUTH CAROLINA: Coach Dave Odom said he doubts Derek Watson will rejoin the team. The star running back played for two weeks before the Outback Bowl.
