The only thing lousy about the Emit series of new and experimental music is that its wonderful and wacky shows aren't every week.

Since 1995, Emit has sporadically brought to the Tampa Bay area performers from music's outer limits, such as electric violinist Jon Rose, jazz pioneers Ken Vandermark, Dave Douglas and Evan Parker, legendary saxophonist Sam Rivers, nutty songwriter-electric rake inventor Eugene Chadbourne and phonetic freak singer Amy Denio.

If you like kooky music that's far, far left of center, Emit may be your bag.

Don't miss the fourth annual Avant-A-Thon, featuring Tampa Bay area avant jazz act Shim, which counts among its members trombonist David Manson, the founder of Emit.

Also on the bill: the ethnic "found sounds" of the improvisational and all-female Loud Zoo; trance and ambient act Trace Element; electronica act Dub Gabriel; and sonic experimentalists Neshilo.

The Emit folks call this Avant-A-Thon more of a "happening" than a gig, with live painting and other art school-type shenanigans.

The Emit series Avant-A-Thon "happens" at 9 p.m. Saturday at Central Stage, 1919 Central Ave., St. Petersburg. $5. Call (727) 341-4363.
