Quintet offers mix of classical, contemporary
By JORGE SANCHEZ, Times Staff Writer LECANTO -- The St. Louis Brass Quintet will bring its 38-year legacy of great concert performances to Curtis Peterson Auditorium for a show at 3 p.m. Sunday. The band, which formed in 1964, is one of the nation's oldest continuing brass bands. Original member trombonist Melvyn Jernigan is still with the group. He is accompanied by some of the nation's best horn players, including trumpet players Allan Dean, a music professor at Yale School of Music, and Ray Sasaki, a music professor at University of Illinois. The other members are Thomas Bacon, the French horn soloist, and tuba player Daniel Perantoni. The quintet has an extensive repertoire of both classical and contemporary music. The contemporary songs include arrangements of music by George and Ira Gershwin, Cole Porter and Duke Ellington. The band's concert set list contains many great standards, with special arrangements for a brass quintet. Expect to hear songs such as Sweet Georgia Brown, Maple Leaf Rag, Beautiful Dreamer and St. Louis Blues. Classical selections include Bach's Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring and Mouret's Rondeau. The versatility of the band is what keeps its shows entertaining, as they switch from one style of music to another, each time displaying the same high level of musicianship. Tickets at the door for the concert are $13.
