Law limits amount of turf in lawns

TAMPA -- As the effects of drought persist, the city is seeking to shrink lawns. Currently, people typically use sod on an average of 70 percent of their yards, the city said. The council Thursday voted to limit that area to 50 percent, which is expected to reduce the water needed to maintain them by 30 percent.

The ordinance will apply to new commercial and residential yards starting in March, and will supplant contrary regulations in deed-restricted areas.

Ron Rotella, a special consultant to the mayor, said the ordinance was meant to promote the use of more drought-resistant plants.
