Storage ideas: some practical, some not

When we arrange coffee mugs to drain on a paper towel on a tray, or wash out a tin can to store kitchen utensils on the counter, somehow it never looks quite as designer-like and trendy as it does in books such as The Storage Book: Over 250 Inspirational ideas for Creating Stylish Home Storage, by Cynthia Inions (Lyons Press, $29.95). Well, maybe it's all in your attitude.

A single glass bowl on an uncluttered rack of stainless-steel shelves looks Zenlike in its simplicity in the photograph in Inions' book, but we all know those shelves would be stacked high with stuff in no time in most homes. As for the author's notion of using an old popup toaster to store pot lids -- well, maybe in your kitchen.

On a slightly more practical note, there are instructions to make a laundry bag and a tool holder that wraps around a bucket, and directions for sewing storage pockets in a shower curtain.
