TALLAHASSEE -- Gov. Jeb Bush on Friday appointed a Fort Myers man to head the Department of Elder Affairs.
Terry White, the 45-year-old executive director of Senior Solutions of Southwest Florida, takes over Jan. 22. He replaces former Secretary Gema Hernandez, who resigned in September after clashing with lawmakers over how she ran the department.
White said one of his first priorities is to increase efforts to expand and strengthen community-based care, in which the state helps elderly residents stay at home for as long as possible.
White graduated from Ohio State University and has worked for the Ohio Department of Aging. As Elder Affairs secretary, he will oversee service programs for the elderly and develop policy recommendations for long-term care.
