'Canes have impressive week

The county's best team is playing its best soccer.

Citrus (13-1-1) tied area-power Belleview and picked up wins against Hernando and Lecanto last week.

Belleview handed the Hurricanes their only loss, in November, and Lecanto has what might be its most complete squad.

"We played well in those three games," Citrus coach Brady Bogart said.

The Hurricanes' 4-0 victory over Lecanto (10-4-1) came in dominating fashion. Citrus scored two goals in each half and outshot the Panthers 26-3.

When people think of Citrus, they usually think offense, but the Hurricanes' defensive lineup of Danialle Coates, Whitney Gelin, Rebecca Gemble, Amanda Johnson and Mettina Maggiore were the stars against Lecanto.

"They put on a display Friday night that was phenomenal," Bogart said. "We just shut them down. It was great to see."

The offense wasn't bad either.

Forward Sonya Segars scored twice, and the 'Canes got goals from Jessica Macdonald and Amanda Yoder.

Segars, who along with midfielder Jenny Floyd has formed a consistent duo on the right side, has 12 goals, third on the team behind Macdonald (19) and Amber Presnick (17).

"It seems like the forwards, the midfielders and the rest are starting to click a little more," Gelin said.

Citrus' toughest remaining regular-season test should come next week, when it travels to Land O'Lakes (14-1-1).

The Gators have Pasco County's top scorers in Stacy Bishop and Casie Poyssick. A few weeks ago, Lecanto coach Kevin Towne called Land O'Lakes the best squad he had seen this season.

"They've pretty much dominated this year," Bogart said. "We need to see how well we can handle them. This will be a measuring stick."

DEJA VU: Crystal River (5-8-2) played twice last week and tied both opponents.

A 1-1 game with Hernando was disconcerting because the Pirates outshot the Leopards 14-6.

FYI: The win over Lecanto gave Citrus a regular-season sweep of county opponents, meaning the Hurricanes haven't lost to a county foe -- ever.

Girls soccer has been a sport here for seven seasons.

"Our team goals are to be the best in the county, the best in the district and the best in the conference," Bogart said. "We try to (go unbeaten in the county) every year, and we've been fortunate to do that. I want to keep it that way."

STARS: Trisha Chenoweth, Lecanto's regular keeper, had an opportunity to play on offense last week against North Marion, and she made the most of it. Chenoweth scored twice and had an assist in an 8-0 victory. ... Citrus' Macdonald had three goals in a 4-0 win against Hernando.
