Bayhead halts recycling; other sites still available

LARGO -- The recycling center at the Bayhead Complex, a city recreation center at 375 Seminole Blvd., has closed because of complaints from the recreation department about the litter in the recycling area. Residents can use the recycling center at 1551 Starkey Road or go to the Kash n' Karry at 2960 East Bay Drive. There also are containers for newspapers and magazines at the rear of the Largo Library building at 351 East Bay Drive. Items that can be recycled are newspapers; green, brown or clear glass; plastic milk, soda or water bottles; and aluminum cans. For information, call the city of Largo at 587-6760.

Heritage Village hosts Seminole Wars program

LARGO -- A free program, "The Seminole Wars: America's First Vietnam," is planned for 10 a.m. Feb. 18 at Heritage Village, 11909 125th St. N in Largo. Joe Crankshaw will talk about how the Seminole Wars were hated by the U.S. military, who thought Florida a worthless place fit only for Indians, and how Seminole successes reinforced those feelings. He will discuss how and why they happened, and the surprising impact they had on the U.S. military. The program is sponsored by the Pinellas County Historical Society. For information or a calendar of events, contact the Village at 582-2123. Heritage Village is in Pinewood Cultural Park, also home to the Pinellas County Extension Service, Florida Botanical Gardens and Gulf Coast Museum of Art.
