A monster of a Superbowl
The monster trucks roar back into Raymond James Stadium on Saturday for the annual Superbowl of Motor Sports. During pro and exhibition events, the behemoth trucks with 66-inch tires will rev, crush, spin and jump. Featured trucks are scheduled to include Grave Digger, Blue Thunder, Spiderman, High Roller and Gunslinger, driven by Scott Hartsack of Oldsmar.
Monster truck rides will be available from 1 to 7 p.m. The pit party runs from 2:30 to 5:30 p.m., when the gates of Raymond James open. Races start at 7:30 p.m.
Raymond James Stadium is at 4201 N Dale Mabry Highway, Tampa. Tickets are $15-$20 adults, $10 youth. For information or tickets, call (813) 673-4300.
Sharpton is keynote speaker at Tampa festival
Tampa's second Black Heritage Festival begins today with events through Monday, including a two-day festival downtown and a parade.
The events begin with a Martin Luther King celebration, with keynote speaker the Rev. Al Sharpton, at 7 tonight at the University of South Florida Special Events Center.
The festival in Curtis Hixon Park runs from 11:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. Friday and 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Saturday. Entertainment includes jazz by Eric Darius, Theo Valentin and Fred Johnson on Friday and gospel, reggae, calypso and hip-hop musicians Saturday. There also will be performances by dance troupes and children's activities.
The Tampa Museum of Art will have a children's art workshop at 11 a.m. Saturday. Other events include a business spotlight from 3 to 6 p.m. Saturday at the Grey Wall Gallery, 12769 N Dale Mabry Highway, and a gospel performance at 7 p.m. Saturday in the USF Special Events Center.
The festival wraps up Monday with a leadership breakfast at 6:45 a.m. at the Marriott Waterside ($20); the annual Martin Luther King Parade, which leave Blake High at noon; and an interfaith service at 6 p.m. at Beulah Baptist Church, 1006 W Cypress St.
