Schools send out letter warning of strange manBy Times staff writer© St. Petersburg Times published January 19, 2002 TAMPA -- Letters were sent home to hundreds of parents of Roosevelt Elementary and Coleman Middle schools Thursday and Friday warning them to be wary of a strange man who tried to talk to children at a school bus stop near S Ferdinand Avenue. Hillsborough schools spokesman Mark Hart said the letter was sent home with children as a precaution after a Coleman Middle School student said she was approached Wednesday morning by a man at the bus stop. The child "came into the front office saying she was being followed by, and at one point, chased by a man she didn't know," he said. When an office worker stepped outside and noticed the man talking to other students, he fled, Hart said. School officials are encouraging children not to walk alone or talk to strangers, to stay clear of dark and isolated places, and to tell a parent or school official if they have safety concerns. Tampa police are investigating. Those with information can call police at 273-0770 or CrimeStoppers at 800-873-TIPS. © 2006 • All Rights Reserved • Tampa Bay Times
