Daily fishing report

With the great weather last weekend, it was time to do some exploring. A call from a good friend firmed up a reconnaissance mission Saturday. The plan was to scout some backcountry holes and locate fish in this warming trend.

A snook was the first fish to the boat at our first stop. It soon was followed by a redfish from the same hole. Both fish fell for a live shrimp freelined next to the mangroves.

Moving on to find new territory, we took advantage of the low tide and clear water to see fish-holding structure such as old pilings, broken-down tree limbs, oyster bars and deeper depressions. Small redfish, sheepshead and ladyfish scattered as we idled along, making mental notes of places to try on another tide.

After catching a few ladyfish and a couple sheepshead, it was time to look for trout.

We targeted deep drop-offs on the edges of shallow grassflats and found the trout hanging on the sandy bottom waiting for our bait to be bounced out of the grass and down the embankment. Several were landed while experimenting with one-eighth-ounce jigheads and new plastic tails in chartreuse/silver glitter and avocado/red glitter.

The day was a success, with a winter inshore slam being caught. Our mission was complete, with several new areas located to keep exploring and learning.
