Wildcat star finishes ninth at Tampa 5K

Wesley Chapel's Kurt Able led a group of 12 county runners at the Blizzard 5K in Tampa on Jan. 12.

Able, an all-county cross country runner for the Wildcats, finished ninth overall in 17 minutes, 25 seconds and won the 15- to 19-year-old group.

Land O'Lakes' Robert Schatzman was the next highest Pasco finisher at 27th overall and second to Able in the 15-19 group.

Lutz's Kattie Horn was the top Pasco woman, finishing 54th overall in 21:56.

Three other Pasco men finished in the top 50 of the 170-person race. Lutz's Dean Redfern finished 33rd and won the 45-49 group.

New Port Richey's Jim Moss and Albert Metayer finished 46th and 49th, respectively.

Five others finished in the top half of the field: Zephyrhills' Rich Scrimshaw (60th), Hudson's Tyler Webber (70th), Lutz's Valerie Porter (72nd) and Dade City's James Bolan (79th).

Zephyrhills' Jean Hopkins won the 70 and older class.

PASCO POWER: Pasco County fared well at the Suncoast Senior Games in Sarasota last month.

Pasco swimmers won eight events.

Zephyrhills' Jean Ritchie took home four first-place finishes to lead the contingent. Land O'Lakes' Doris Prokopi left with three first-place finishes and three runners-up.

Port Richey's Robert Williams was the most prolific male Pasco swimmer. He won one event, took second in three and third in two. New Port Richey's Don Smith earned two second-place and three third-place finishes. Zephyrhills' Virginia Young-Forsman left with three runners-up and a third-place finish. Zephyrhills' Leone Asbury grabbed two runners-up and a third-place spot.

Zephyrhills' Roger Hammond also was a winner, taking the 55-59 shuffleboard singles crown. Zephyrhills' Bud Trommater finished second in the 70-74 class.

Pasco competitors also finished strong in cycling. Hudson's Robert St. Pierre left with a second-place, third-place and two fourth-place showings. Hudson's Nancy Perkins took third in two events.

Zephyrhills' Jean Stallcup showed her prowess in tennis. She finished third in table tennis and second in tennis. She also finished second in mixed doubles with Zephyrhills' Roy Nyren.

Nyren also teamed with Zephyrhills' Dick Moffat for second in doubles. Moffat also added a second-place showing in singles.

Dade City's Wendell Newton finished third in singles and doubles table tennis.

UPCOMING EVENTS: The West Florida Y/Rail to Trail 100K and 50K will be Feb.16.

The event will be at the Withlacoochee Rail to Trail east of Brooksville.

The 100K race will serve as the RRCA Southern Regional Championship. That race starts at 6 a.m. The 50K race starts at 7 a.m.

Registration costs $55 before Feb. 1. The cost jumps to $65 after, and there is no race day registration.
