Side showBy SHARON FINK, Times Staff Writer© St. Petersburg Times published January 23, 2002 THE BEAT GOES ON. AND ON. AND ON. AND ON: There's the Sonny Bono memorial statue in Palm Springs, Calif. The Sonny Bono Wildlife Refuge at California's Salton Sea State Recreation Area. The Sonny Bono freeway interchange in Moreno Valley, Calif. And the Sonny Bono memorial park in Washington, D.C. But that still is not enough to memorialize the former pop singer, former husband of Cher, former mayor of Palm Springs and congressman who died in a skiing accident in 1998. Now there's the Sonny Bono Memorial Freeway, 40 miles of Interstate 10 in California's Coachella Valley. State lawmakers created it last February. Up next: The Sonny Bono Best Artist With No More Than Three Hits Lifetime Achievement Grammy. The Sonny Bono Best Variety Show Performance by a Wife Emmy. And Cher's Sonny Bono memorial tattoo. Then again, she probably already has one. THE MATHERS FAMILY VALUES: Eminem, the rapper whose mother sued him for what he said in lyrics and interviews about his chaotic childhood, is publicly apologizing for offending her. In a trailer for his just-wrapped movie, 8 Mile, he raps "Mama, I'm sorry, I didn't mean to hurt you," Launch.com says. Debbie R. Mathers-Nelson eventually settled two lawsuits against her son out of court for $25,000. She went back to court last year to get more money. A judge told her to go away. GOOD HELP IS SO HARD TO FIND: Winona Ryder, still waiting to hear if she'll be charged with shoplifting in a Los Angeles run-in with police, had an encounter with an electronic store detective recently, but it wasn't her fault, the New York Post says. Ryder was leaving the Express store in an L.A. shopping center when the security alarm went off. She had paid for her clothes, but the clerk had left the security sensor on one of the items. The Post says Ryder politely went back to the clerk and had the sensor removed but was a little embarrassed about it. © 2006 • All Rights Reserved • St. Petersburg Times
