Focus on volunteers

Uhuru Furniture & Collectibles, a retail business setup to benefit the African People's Education and Defense Fund, will hold a volunteer training session at 10 a.m. on Saturday at the store, 945 Central Ave., St. Petersburg. After the session, volunteers are invited to stay and participate in a workday including renovations, painting and donation pickups. For information, call Uhuru Furniture & Collectibles, 896-4577.

The Family Service Centers' Rape Crisis Program will hold training sessions for volunteers in February. The center needs volunteers to be on-call to provide rape survivors counseling and support. Work includes two shifts each month, including weekends, holidays and overnights. Reliable transportation is required. For information, call the SAFE Center, 535-9811.

The Retired Senior Volunteer Program of Pinellas Opportunity Council Inc. will hold its next advisory council meeting at 3 p.m. Tuesday at the Enoch Davis Center, 1111 18th Ave. S, St. Petersburg. After the business meeting, Deborah Clark, Pinellas County Supervisor of Elections, will demonstrate the new touch-screen voting machines.

RSVP also has several projects in need of volunteers including the Florida African American Heritage Celebration, Creative Clay Inc. in St. Petersburg and Help A Child Inc. For information, call RSVP, 327-8690, ext. 22.

The Women's Council of the St. Petersburg Area Chamber of Commerce is accepting nominations for its Women of Distinction awards. Business Woman of the Year and Community Service Woman of the Year will be presented at the council's Women's Symposium, scheduled for March 28 at the Renaissance Vinoy in St. Petersburg. The deadline for nominations is 5 p.m. Feb. 1. Nominees must have lived or worked in Pinellas County for a minimum of one year. For nomination forms, call Dianne Caton at 821-4069 .
