Carey, Virgin cut ties
EMI, Virgin's parent company, announced Wednesday it would pay Carey, 31, $28-million in addition to the $21-million she has received since arriving in April. Their association was to last for several albums to the tune of $100-million. Glitter, Carey's first album for Virgin and the soundtrack for her movie of the same name, was a major disappointment. It sold 501,000 copies, according to Soundscan, a sharp drop from the success she had for her previous label, Columbia. Reports began circulating late last year that EMI was trying to buy out Carey's contract. This month EMI denied it had agreed to a such a deal. EMI and Carey issued a joint statement Wednesday. New EMI chairman Alain Levy said the move is "the most prudent course of action. We wish Mariah the best." Carey said: "This is the right decision for me." Carey's lawyer, Marshall Grossman, told the Associated Press the singer is evaluating offers from other labels. Directors guild likes foreigners
