Missing whooping crane found killed by a bobcat

CHASSAHOWITZKA -- The whooping crane reported missing earlier this month was found dead over the weekend, the victim of a bobcat. Biologist Richard Urbanek found the remains Saturday after searching near a pen set up in Chassahowitzka National Wildlife Refuge for the whooping cranes. The discovery was made public Wednesday. "It's a serious blow to the project, but all we can hope is the other birds are more wary," said refuge manager Jim Kraus. It was the second bird killed by a bobcat since the flock arrived in December, trailing ultralight aircraft. The birds -- five of the original flock of 10 remain -- made history by flying 1,217 miles from Wisconsin. Researchers hope they return north on their own in the spring.

Child must undergo rabies treatment if dog isn't found

The Department of Public Safety, Animal Control has announced a child was scratched by a stray dog on Tuesday, at The Homosassa Elementary School playground on W Yulee Drive. The animal is described as being cream in color with white muzzle and short hair. If this dog is not located by Feb. 1, rabies vaccinations will have to be administered to the victim. Anyone with information regarding this animal is asked to call Citrus County Animal Control at 726-7660.
