Dorian Velez, Bill Cristie and B.J. Brownridge have signed to play at Henry Ford Community College in Dearborn, Mich.

Velez, a catcher, is a 2000 Canterbury graduate and played for Daytona Beach Community College last year. He was a Times all-county pick in 2000.

Cristie, a 2001 Canterbury graduate, last played for the Crusaders in 2000 and was a student assistant coach at the school in 2001. Brownridge, an outfielder, is a Boca Ciega graduate. He last played for the Pirates in 1999.

Shorecrest catcher Zach Wendkos, a second-team all-state selection last season, has signed with Princeton.

Wendkos hit .397 in 2001 with 24 RBIs and an on-base percentage of .520. He had eight doubles and a home run. But his strength is defense, which made him attractive to potential colleges.

His excellence in the classroom didn't hurt either.

"Because of both, he had a pretty good selection of where he wanted to go," Shorecrest coach Don Reed. said. "He really hit the ball well, too, but he plays very good defense."

At Princeton, Wendkos will play for former major-league catcher Scott Bradley, who played with four pro teams, including the New York Yankees.

"That will be a good situation for him, playing for a catcher," Reed said.
