The standup challenge

The standup challenge

Comic Bill Bellamy has a long resume of TV gigs: Showtime at the Apollo, HBO's Def Comedy Jam, a Showtime comedy special, Booty Call, a long stint as host of MTV Jams. He's also been a player in movies, including a substantial part in last year's The Brothers.

When he appeared in Tampa last year, though, he said standup always has been his mainstay.

"I love it and it's everything that I am," Bellamy said in March. "Standup is no joke. You have no parachute. You've got to be funny."

Bellamy performs tonight through Saturday at the Tampa Improv. Shows are at 8 p.m. today, 8 and 10:30 p.m. Friday and 8, 10 and midnight Saturday. Tickets are $18-$20. The Improv is in Centro Ybor, 1600 E Eighth Ave., Tampa. For information or reservations, call (813) 864-4000.
