TAMPA PALMS -- After-school math practices paid off for a team of Chiles Elementary School students, who claimed third place in the county Math Bowl. The third annual competition was held Thursday at Seminole Elementary in Tampa.
"We're just on cloud nine right now," said Chiles' gifted teacher and team coach Lisa Marohnic, speaking for herself and her winning students, fifth-graders Ricky Semlitz and Keith Sommers and fourth-graders Zi Ning and Skylar Seto.
Fifty-five schools competed in the two-day preliminary competition in December. The teams of fourth- and fifth-graders answered head-scratching questions ranging from algebra and geometry to word problems. Scores were based on accuracy and speed.
Only six teams moved on to the finals. Chiles took first place on day one, followed by Claywell Elementary and Clark Elementary. Yates, Limona and Bevis elementaries, all in the Brandon area, won the second day's competition.
Limona Elementary won the top spot in the finals, followed by Bevis.
Each member of the top three teams received a trophy. All finalists received "coozie" cups, math tattoos and ribbons.
