Ford dealership expands

A car lot vacant for 15 months is buzzing again, as Ernie Haire Used Car Automall, an extension of the Florida Avenue Ford dealership.

The store opened Jan. 2 at the southwest corner of Bearss and Nebraska avenues, just north of a CarMax used-car store. Greg Balasco, general manager of Ernie Haire Ford, said the store is marketing late-model used cars, backed by Ford warranties and service terms.

"The niche there is going to be the same kind of niche that CarMax has," he said.

The location was home for years to a vegetable stand, until the auto showroom was opened three years ago by ValuCar, a Bradenton-based chain partly owned by Ernie Haire, president of the Ford dealership. Then ValuCar collapsed into bankruptcy in 2000 after the FBI raided most of its offices, including the Tampa one. Nobody has been charged in that investigation.

Balasco said Ernie Haire Ford recently bought the location. For information, call 866-8868.
