'Channel A' tag offensive to communities
© St. Petersburg Times
I am writing in response to your recent articles regarding the school boundary issues for Westchase and Bryant Elementary Schools.
First, I thank you for covering such a pivotal issue in our community.
The second reason I am writing today is to request that you correct the way you refer to our area. Hillsborough County Pupil Services Director Bill Person and the Westchase residents appointed to the school boundary committee arbitrarily fabricated the name "Channel A" to refer to our area.
In fact, Channel A is the name of the drainage basin for the waste water treatment plant off Sheldon Road.
Not only is it unfortunate and offensive that the committee would think it appropriate to name our communities after a waste water drainage basin, but the mere fact that they did speaks volumes of their self-professed dedication to serving our best interests.
On several occasions during the School Board meeting on Jan. 22, Bill Person was asked by the board to refrain from calling our area "Channel A" and instead to refer to us by our community names. When asked directly by a board member for the names of our communities, Mr. Person did not know; yet he rattled off the myriad names of the villages of Westchase with ease several times during the meeting.
For the record, we are Meadowbrook, Sheldon Chase, Pebble Brook, and Three Lakes.
