USF will host War, Terrorism and the Challenge of a Free Press, a panel discussion on media coverage of Sept. 11, at 6:30 p.m. Monday at Davis Hall, Room 130. The event will be moderated by Rob Lorei, news and public affairs director at WMNF-FM 88.5 and host of WEDU's Tampa Bay Week. Panelists will include Bob Steele, senior faculty and leader of the ethics group at the Poynter Institute; Eric Deggans, TV critic at the St. Petersburg Times; Monica Yadav, a news anchor and investigative reporter at ABC affiliate station WWSB-TV in Sarasota; Jay Black, Poynter Jamison Endowed Chair in Media Ethics and Press Policy at USF; and Bob Dardenne, a journalism professor at USF.

Join naturalist and author Dick Russell for a slide presentation and book signing at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Florida Marine Research Institute auditorium. Russell led the crusade to save the Atlantic striped bass in the 1980s. In his new book, Eye of the Whale, Russell turns his attention to the gray whale. Call 896-8626 for information.

Robert M. Diamond, special assistant for faculty and program development at USF, will speak on Trends in Higher Education, at noon Wednesday at the Florida Center for Teachers, Room 118. Diamond will discuss the financial, political and academic forces at work in higher education and their impact on faculty and educational institutions. This is part of the Program for Ethics in Education and the Community. Call 553-1579 for information and to reserve a seat.
