Bay area tossed Bank of America boneBy JEFF HARRINGTON, Times Staff Writer© St. Petersburg Times published January 28, 2002 When Tim Laney replaced Cathy Bessant as Bank of America's Florida president this month and moved the "unofficial" headquarters of the state's largest bank from Tampa back to Jacksonville, he promised the bay area wouldn't be forgotten. Here's one consolation prize. Katie Scanlan, a 14-year veteran of public relations and marketing stints in the bank, was named last week to the newly created post of community relations manager for the Tampa Bay area. Along with coordinating charitable works and cajoling community leaders, Scanlan will oversee the bank's community relations managers in Florida. She'll be based in Tampa with an office in St. Petersburg. The statewide post may soothe some ruffled feathers after Laney's Jacksonville switch, whether that's the megabank's intention or not. Bank of America insists it's irrelevant to fuss over where its top state executives happen to be located. "We're well beyond the antiquated version of where the state headquarters is," Scanlan said. "That has always been a sticking point everybody asks about. But for us, banking is set up so different." Bank of America spokeswoman Christina Beyer points out that the executive overseeing Florida's market presidents happens to work out of Fort Lauderdale. And Laney is on the road as much as he works in Jacksonville. Beyer's take on the bank's management hierarchy: "We're in a virtual world." © 2006 • All Rights Reserved • Tampa Bay Times
