Foodie fight

www.ChowHound.com/

I was amazed at some of the mail from fellow coffee snobs after mentioning it in a previous column. It seems that there are more of us than you'd think. And while on a hunt for some odd culinary ingredients to go with my expensive coffee, this site came into view. Forget the design, the content's where it's at. If you're passionate about good food, you'll love this place.

Wheels not required

www.SkyTran.net/

That's not SkyTrain by the way. This site has nothing to do with cheap air travel in the 1970s. Have a peek at the groovy simulation of this futuristic transportation system. The idea is these small cars are hooked into some kind of magnetic propulsion system and travel at 100 mph. It's an ideal way to escape the drudgery of the daily commute. Who knows if anything like this will ever be reality but we public transportation fiends can dream.

Protection, software style

www.Free-Firewall.org/

Some things are worth more than money, and protection when online is priceless -- and getting more expensive, too. This site rightfully points out that there aren't many free firewall programs left for Windows. But if you are looking for a free or really inexpensive way to stay safe, this site is worth bookmarking. Mac folks are covered, too, which is a nice change from the norm.

Have network, will travel

www.SpaceDaily.com/news/satellite-sng-02a.html

It's quite a haul until Christmas, but I'm already planning the goodies that I'll claim I can't live without. I'm totally wireless at home. But when I leave the radius of my wireless cave, I'm back to phone cords and dialups. Imagine the joy of having a portable T1 line in a case! If you're rich beyond my wildest dreams, this baby's for you.

Time eraser

YugoP.com/ver3/stuff/03/fla.html

Operating systems aren't exactly overflowing with wit and verve when it comes to naming the goodies that come bundled inside. Just as well; you wouldn't want the Justice Department chuckling in court over some saucy double-entendre. Explorer, Calculator and Clock aren't going to get any Justice type in a tizzy no matter how you pronounce them. No matter, we have the Internet to save us. I haven't found a wacky calculator, but here's a whizzy clock to keep in the background.
