Fired deputy has hearing rescheduled to March 19By JAMIE JONES, Times Staff Writer© St. Petersburg Times published January 29, 2002 BROOKSVILLE -- A hearing for former Hernando County sheriff's Deputy Tony Mazza, who is appealing his firing, has been rescheduled to March 19 at 18900 Cortez Blvd. Mazza was fired last year for using excessive force. He gave a prominent local lawyer a black eye and a fractured rib during a traffic stop Oct. 28. He will appear before the Career Service Appeals Board, a panel of five citizens, who will hear testimony from people who watched the incident and others who can speak about Mazza. The board will make a recommendation to Sheriff Richard Nugent about whether Mazza's firing was proper. Nugent ultimately decides whether Mazza can rejoin the staff. The board delayed the hearing from Feb. 5 to accommodate the schedules of witnesses. © 2006 • All Rights Reserved • Tampa Bay Times
