Televised dinner to honor outstanding educators

Pinellas County Schools will honor 100 outstanding educators at a dinner hosted by the Pinellas County Education Foundation at 7 p.m. Thursday at Tropicana Field. The district's representative for the statewide Teacher of the Year competition will be announced.

The event will air live at 7 p.m. on WPDS-Ch. 14, which appears on Time Warner Cable and Verizon americast.

Canterbury arts school to present 'Annie'

The Canterbury School of Florida Arts Education Program will present Annie in three performances at the school, 901 58th Ave. NE. Tickets are available for a 12:45 p.m. performance Feb. 6 and for 7 p.m. performances on Feb. 8 and 9.

Reserved seating is $15. General admission is $10 for adults and $5 for students and seniors at the door. International Thespian Society members will be admitted free.

Bowling event benefits Oasis education program

The Oasis program will host the 13th annual Oasis Bowl-a-Thon on Feb. 9 and 10 at Sunrise Lanes, 6393 Dr. M.L. King (Ninth) St. N. Five-member "Champion for Education" teams can compete between 10:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. or between 2 and 5 p.m.

Donations will benefit Oasis, an alternative education program supported by the University of South Florida, Pinellas County schools and the Juvenile Welfare Board. The program serves students of average to above-average ability who have not performed to their full potential in traditional education settings.

Students, parents invited to National College Fair

Bay area high school students and their parents are invited to attend a National College Fair from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Feb. 10 at the Tampa Convention Center, 333 S Franklin St. Representatives from 142 public and private colleges and universities from Florida and throughout the United States will be available to answer questions and provide program information.

The fair, which is sponsored by the National Association for College Admission Counseling in Alexandria, Va., will feature workshops on admissions procedures, testing and financial aid. It is free and requires no advance registration.

Tutors, mentors needed at several county schools

Pinellas County Schools' office of community involvement announces critical needs at these south county schools:

John M. Sexton Elementary, 1997 54th Ave. N, needs mentors for two Doorways scholarship students and mentors for students in grades 2 through 4 who need help with behavior and decisionmaking skills.

Seminole High, 8401 131st St. N, needs geometry and algebra I and II tutors.

Westgate Elementary, 3560 58th St. N, needs a tutor-mentor for a Doorways student struggling with math and social studies. The school also needs a mentor for a young Doorways student who needs a positive role model and for two Doorways girls with interests in sports.
