Bank Atlantic will open its doors 7 days©Associated PressFebruary 1, 2002 FORT LAUDERDALE -- Hoping to improve on other banks' failed attempts, Bank Atlantic will begin offering customers seven-day banking. Starting in April, the company's 80 branches, including the seven in the Tampa Bay area, will open Saturdays and Sundays and add extended weekday hours. "Our customers have told us they want a bank that's open when it's convenient to them, not to us," said Alan B. Levan, chairman and chief executive of Bank Atlantic Bancorp, the bank's parent company. He acknowledged that the plan will be expensive, but he said it will generate new business. Miami banking consultant Ken Thomas said the bank's plan is good for public relations, but similar attempts to extend branch hours have been short-lived. Other efforts failed because of a lack of profitable activity on Sundays and the scheduling troubles seven-day banking creates for employees, Thomas said. © 2006 • All Rights Reserved • St. Petersburg Times
