Drive seeks blood, sweat and cheers
By JOY DAVIS-PLATT, Times Staff Writer SPRING HILL -- Once each year, everyone's team colors are red at the Hernando Community Blood Bank. On Saturday, the blood bank will have its ninth annual Blood Bowl blood drive where donors can show their allegiances by donating blood in the name of a college, high school or professional sports team. During the Blood Bowl, donors will receive commemorative T-shirts and have an opportunity to spin the 2-foot Wheel of Life to win prizes such as autographed sports posters, pictures and pennants. This year's blood drive will feature sports memorabilia from all manner of professional sports teams. One of this year's most treasured prizes will be a football autographed by Steve Spurrier, former University of Florida football coach. In recent years, the event has been held in the parking lot of the Wal-Mart SuperCenter, but this year it is moving back to the blood bank on Cortez Boulevard. "We're going to have the music upstairs on the balcony," said center operations manager Lucy Coburn. "Between that and the grilling of hotdogs, we're hoping to lure people off the highway and into the center." Coburn plans to donate in honor of the University of South Florida Bulls basketball team. "This is always a fun day," she said. "We're all getting very excited. If all goes as planned, the center will receive 100 units of blood during the day. "We all work very hard, but it's worth it," she said. Two Tampa Bay Buccaneers cheerleaders will be on hand for photos, Coburn said. The Blood Bowl Blood Drive will be from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at the center, 12395 Cortez Blvd. Call 596-2002 for information. Blood donors must be at least 17 years old, weigh at least 103 pounds and show valid photo identification. © 2006 • All Rights Reserved • Tampa Bay Times
