MAN BEATEN WITH TORQUE CONVERTER DIES: Kevin Malloy, 22, died after he was beaten in the head with a metal car part -- a torque converter -- while he slept at Jonathan Ryan Patton's house south of Brooksville, according to investigators. Patton, 19, was charged with murder. The Hernando County Sheriff's Office suspects Patton beat Malloy with the torque converter over a 17-year-old girl they both had been dating.

LOTTO WINNING TICKET BOUGHT IN BROOKSVILLE: One of four winning tickets for an $85-million Lotto jackpot was purchased at the Hess Express station at State Road 50 and Cobb Road. It was sold to a Dade City farmer who had stopped at the gas station to refuel his pickup truck before going hunting.

NATURE COAST HIGH SCHOOL COST KEEPS RISING: Nature Coast Technical High School was supposed to cost about $39-million to build and equip. But the school, which has undergone design and vocational program changes at the last minute, is now estimated to cost $40.8-million because of those changes. The school is expected to open in August 2003.
