LECANTO -- The Central Florida Symphony Orchestra will perform a 25th anniversary concert at 3 p.m. Sunday at Curtis Peterson Auditorium.
The symphony has a new conductor, James Plondke, and the performance will feature works by Debussy and Beethoven.
The concert will start with two overtures: The Promenade Overture by John Corigliano and the overture from the Russian opera Ruslan and Lyudmila by Mikhail Glinka.
Corigliano's Promenade Overture is interesting because it is meant to be performed with the first few measures played by the brass off stage, followed by the entrance of the orchestra while playing. It is the composers' homage to Haydn's Farewell Symphony, a popular closing piece that has the players exiting until just two violins are left to finish.
The other selections are Prelude to an Afternoon of a Fawn by Claude Debussy and Ludwig van Beethoven's Fifth Piano Concerto, also known as The Emperor Concerto.
Joining the orchestra for the piano concerto will be guest soloist Andreas Klein. A Berlin native, Klein studied music as the Juilliard School in New York City and earned a doctoral degree in music from Rice University in Houston.
Klein's career as soloist has taken him to the world's most prestigious venues. His concert itinerary includes shows at Wigmore Hall in London, Berlin's Philharmonic Hall, New York's Alice Tully and Carnegie Hall and the Kennedy Center and the National Gallery in Washington, D.C.
He has toured throughout the U.S., Middle East and Europe. His recordings include three highly praised CD releases: The Beethoven/Berg Sonatas, Works by Chopin and Liszt and Dancing Through Times.
Advance tickets are $12; call 746-6382. Tickets at the door for the 3 p.m. concert are $15.
