Man with knife steals woman's purse

INVERNESS -- A man stole a woman's purse Wednesday night on the Withlacoochee State Trail, according to the Citrus County Sheriff's Office.

About 10 p.m., a 56-year-old Inverness woman was walking on the trail near the 1600 block of U.S. 41. She stopped to smoke a cigarette when a man carrying a knife walked up. The man put away the knife and spent about 15 minutes smoking with the woman, sheriff's spokeswoman Ronda Hemminger Evan said. When the woman tried to run away, the man grabbed the purse from around her neck.

He is white, about 5 feet 9 inches and 170 pounds, Evan said. He had a full beard and wore a dark T-shirt and light-colored shorts. Anyone with information is asked to call the Sheriff's Office at 726-4488 or 1-888-ANY-TIPS.
