TAMPA -- After averaging 22 points and being almost perfect from the free-throw line during two games, University of Tampa senior guard Jon Brown has been named the Sunshine State Conference Player of the Week.

Brown dropped in 17 points in UT's 82-58 win at Florida Tech on Jan. 23 and followed that with an outstanding performance against rival Florida Southern on Jan. 26. In the Spartans' 81-79 win against the Moccasins, Brown scored 27 points, had eight rebounds, dished out six assists and was 10-for-10 from the free-throw line.

In case that wasn't enough, Brown also nailed the game-winning shot on a running, one-handed jump shot with 2.6 seconds left in the game.

Brown shot 58 percent from the floor during those two games and was 15 of 16 from the free-throw line. He continued his solid play Wednesday night against rival Eckerd, scoring 22 points as the Spartans rolled 68-48.

The win moves UT, ranked fifth in the NABC Division II poll, to 17-1 on the season and 7-0 in the SSC. The victory also extends the Spartans' lead in the SSC standings. UT has a two-game lead on Florida Southern (5-2) and a three-game margin on Rollins and Eckerd (4-3).

UT plays at Barry on Saturday and returns home Feb. 6 to host Lynn.

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL: UT got double-digit performances from Juanita McClinton, Nichole Blair and April Hinton on Wednesday as the Spartans rolled to an 89-68 win against Eckerd.

Blair led UT with 19 points against the Tritons, while Hinton scored 18 and McClinton added 17.

The Spartans are 4-3 in the SSC and 13-6 overall and have climbed into a tie with Barry for third place in the league. UT is two games behind first-place Rollins and a game behind second-place Florida Tech. UT plays at Barry on Saturday.

BASEBALL: The Spartans opened their 2002 season this week with a three-game series against Lynn.

The teams will close the series today with a doubleheader beginning at 3 p.m.

UT, ranked sixth in the Collegiate Baseball preseason Division II poll, will follow that with a three-game series at Georgia College in Milledgeville, Ga., on Feb. 9 and 10.
