CITRUS PARK -- Four years ago, Sickles High School's fledgling DECA club sent just two members to the state competition. This year, 34 of them qualified for the state leadership conference to be held Feb. 28 in Orlando.
DECA, which stands for Distributive Education Clubs of America, is sponsored at Sickles by fashion marketing teacher Becky Anzevino and marketing teacher Sam Perrone.
Students scoring first-place trophies included Sara Rees and Jamie Massey in advertising campaign, Noelle Hoffman and Dean Nieves in hospitality management, and Jason Ackerman and Andrew Glickman in sports and entertainment marketing. The club also had three second-place teams and three third-place teams.
Business classes at Sickles are offered through its Academy of Fashion and Marketing. It includes programs designed for students interested in learning about careers in fashion, marketing, merchandising and management.
Students also can enroll in an on-the-job training program by working part time at a local retailer. This allows them to earn high school credit, a paycheck and career skills all in one.
Students eligible for the state conference are seeking sponsors to help defray the cost of attending, which is about $165 each. Anyone interested in becoming a sponsor can call Anzevino or Perrone at 631-4742, ext. 62.
