SAN ANTONIO -- City commissioners are expected to hear a proposal Tuesday from a Pinellas Park promoter looking to stage two days of triathlon racing in the Saint Leo and San Antonio area, drawing up to 600 entrants.
In a letter to the city, promoter York Somerville said he is putting together the Saint Leo University Triathlon in conjunction with the school, tentatively set for June 29 and 30.
Somerville, president of Showtime Promotions, declined to discuss the proposal before Tuesday's scheduled 7:30 p.m. public meeting.
But in his letter to the city, he said he is planning a sports exposition with 15 to 25 vendors at the university during the race and said organizers plan to obtain permits from Pasco County, the Florida Department of Transportation and municipalities.
"Showtime Promotions will endeavor to make this event a great experience for all the cities, Saint Leo University, vendors, police and sheriff's department and of course the athletes," Somerville wrote in his letter to the city.
Although details of the race were not released, a triathlon typically challenges participants to race a combination of swimming, running and bicycling events.
