Greater Woodlawn residents support new car wash plans

ST. PETERSBURG -- It has taken nearly a year and a change in ownership, but plans for a car wash in Greater Woodlawn are under way, with neighbors on board.

Principals recently pitched their plan to residents for a coin-operated car wash at 2300 Dr. M.L. King (Ninth) St. N, site of the former Sterling Cleaners. The Greater Woodlawn Neighborhood Association last May had overwhelmingly rejected a similar plan.

Partners Joel Samon, Jared Samon and Chris Anderson told the group they would seek a parking variance in order to maximize green space. They promised a buffer wall along the alley bordering the property's west side to help dull noise levels and increase security. They said they would grant police the authority to enforce trespassing laws on the site without having to contact them first.

Michael Grubbs sold the property to the new group in November, after unsuccessful attempts to build a car wash there.

According to Joe Klein, who lives just west of the site, "The new owners show a 180-degree different attitude on the whole thing. They know that if they cannot get the neighborhood's cooperation, it will not be a sound business for them."

Of 26 residents attending the meeting, 23 voted to support the proposition, with two opposed and one abstention. A committee of residents and owners chaired by Klein will meet in about two weeks to discuss the design of the car wash.
