9/11 remembered

www.TelevisionArchive.org/

Television is one of those things I love to hate. But during times of crisis and the need to communicate with the population on a grand scale, nothing beats it. The Internet couldn't keep up on Sept. 11 and radio's thousands of words just didn't convey what pictures could. Here you'll find streaming video from TV stations the world over covering those horrific events. It's still too soon for me to spend a long time on this site without needing to take a alk, but you might be stronger. If nothing else, I'll keep it in my bookmarks for when the time is right. If you can appreciate it now, do so.

Pop off

www.google.com/help/nopopupads.html

I had a great link to an article on popunder ads, those ultra-annoying windows that open during just about any Web browsing session. But, alas, the address was about as long as all the clapping in the State of the Union address. Basically, if you're being plagued by these ads, it could well be older versions of programs such as BearShare, Audio Galaxy, Gator and a few others at fault. This great link at Google gives you the skinny on the how and why of popunders.

Change of address

MakeAShorterLink.com/

Have you ever tried to copy and paste a Web address that wraps around a city block into an e-mail? It might be something, say, from Mapquest.com that details how to get to your house. Most e-mail programs either truncate or mangle the address so it turns up on the other side and is useless. Enter this site: If you paste in a long, long URL, it'll make an alias for it. So your party invitation map can get to everybody in far fewer characters. Give it a spin. It's a real time and eyeball saver. There doesn't seem to be any advertising on the site but I'm sure that'll change in due course.

That '70s show

www.StarskyTorino.com

Goodness, this TV show had everything. Car chases, dialog that would make anybody over 12 cringe, and hairdos from Mars. I'm of course referring to the '70s hit Starsky and Hutch. Most of the memorabilia survived about as long as David Soul's singing career, but other items, such as one of the 1,000 Ford Torinos made in 1976, have survived. And this Web author's trying to find them. If you're itching for a trip back to what the late '70s looked like, this site's for you.

Desktop PC

www.Soldam.com/products/prism/

The countdown to the holidays begins. If I don't get one of these jammed in my sock next December, somebody will pay. It's one of the niftiest PC cases I think I've seen. Rather than having one's bulky system box to the side, under or on top of a desk, this scheme places the innards of your PC in the desk itself. No place for paper clips there, I'm afraid. It's a great space saver and heck of a conversation starter, especially if you hang out in the geeky circles.
