Seminole youth selected for leadership forum

Richard Gordon Jr., son of Cynthia and Richard Gordon Sr. of Seminole, has been selected for the National Youth Leadership Forum on Defense, Intelligence and Diplomacy in Washington, D.C.

Gordon is one of 350 students chosen to attend the forum. Dually enrolled at Pinellas Park High School's Criminal Justice Academy and St. Petersburg College, he maintains a 4.0 grade point average and scored in the 99th percentile on the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery of Tests. He is editor of his school newspaper and is a member of Who's Who Among American High School Students.

Seminole Middle School music program honored

Seminole Middle School has been named the only middle school music "demonstration school" in the state by the Florida Music Educators Association and the Florida Department of Education. It is the third time the school has received the award, considered the top statewide honor for music programs.

The school was judged on the quality of student performance in band, chorus and orchestra, the variety of courses offered, and the level of community involvement. It will serve as a model for other schools' music programs for the next three years, when it can re-apply for demonstration school status.

The music department, under the guidance of band director Chad Guess, strings director Jane Lucas and choral director Joey Miazga, also received an enrollment award for teaching music to 37 percent of the student body.
