PINELLAS PARK -- The Pinellas County unit of the American Cancer Society, located in Pinellas Park, announces various Relay for Life kickoff meetings this month.

Today there are meetings at 6 p.m. at the UPARC cafeteria at the Long Center, 1501 Belcher Road, Clearwater and at the Seminole Recreation Center, 9100 113th St. North, Seminole.

Others are as follows:

Tuesday -- 6 p.m., Salvador Dali Museum, 1000 Third St. S, St. Petersburg.

Feb. 21 -- 5:30 p.m., Largo City Hall, 201 Highland Ave., Largo and at 6 p.m., Church of the Good Shepherd, 639 Edgewater Dr., Dunedin.

Feb. 26 -- 6 p.m., Holiday Inn, 3990 Tampa Road, Oldsmar. This year will mark the first year Oldsmar will participate.

Feb. 27 -- 6 p.m., Louis Pappas Riverside Restaurant, 10 W Dodecanese Blvd., Tarpon Springs.

Pinellas Park held its kickoff meeting Jan. 14.

The idea for Relay for Life came in 1984 when Dr. Gordon Platt took the fight against cancer to a high school track in Tacoma, Wash. Spectators came out to watch, and some even spent the night.

Now, Relay for Life is a signature fundraising event for the American Cancer Society. The kickoff meetings give people a chance to form teams, pick up packets, register and choose campsites at the various venues.

The relay events, which will be held in the county in the spring, unofficially begin with the setting up of a "tent city" at the race site. Teams pledge to raise money, decorate their campsites, play games and walk around the track until the event is over.

Cancer survivors generally walk the first lap themselves.
