This year will mark the first year Oldsmar will participate. Feb. 27 -- 6 p.m., Louis Pappas Riverside Restaurant, 10 W Dodecanese Blvd., Tarpon Springs. Pinellas Park held its kickoff meeting Jan. 14. The idea for Relay for Life came in 1984 when Dr. Gordon Platt took the fight against cancer to a high school track in Tacoma, Wash. Spectators came out to watch, and some even spent the night. Now, Relay for Life is a signature fundraising event for the American Cancer Society. The kickoff meetings give people a chance to form teams, pick up packets, register and choose campsites at the various venues. The relay events, which will be held in the county in the spring, unofficially begin with the setting up of a "tent city" at the race site. Teams pledge to raise money, decorate their campsites, play games and walk around the track until the event is over. Cancer survivors generally walk the first lap themselves.
