Entering the final weekend of recruiting, Florida found itself short on defensive recruits.

On the day before National Signing Day, the Gators had picked up three defensive players and increased its commitments to 19.

Cornerback Nic Brooks of Warner Robins (Ga.) Northside chose Florida over LSU, Mississippi State and Georgia. Brooks is 6 feet 1, 180 pounds.

Also, after his visit last weekend, Terrence Holmes, a 6-foot, 185-pound wide receiver/defensive back from Glassboro, N.J., orally committed after Florida showed renewed interest.

Finally, Florida picked up a commitment from defensive end Steve Harris (6-4, 250, Coral Gables), who originally committed to Missouri but had a change of heart after visiting Florida last weekend. CINCINNATI: Coach Rick Minter agreed to a contract extension through 2005.

IOWA STATE: A staff member said he accepts the blame for inaccuracies in his academic credentials that appeared in a media guide. The biography for Charlie Partridge, the director of operations, said he earned master's degrees from Drake and Iowa State. But he only completed part of each. Athletic director Bruce Van De Velde did not say what, if any, action would be taken.

MICHIGAN: Running back B.J. Askew has been charged with assaulting his girlfriend. Askew was released on bond. He is scheduled for a Feb.20 pretrial hearing.

NEBRASKA: Manaia Brown, the defensive lineman who left the team to be with his ailing father, has been denied a release from his scholarship. The school would not elaborate.

VIRGINIA TECH: Marcus Vick, a highly regarded high school quarterback, announced he will follow his older brother Michael's path and sign with the Hokies.
