Streetscape administrator fired over project's troubles

INVERNESS -- The Inverness City Council voted unanimously Tuesday evening to fire its grant administrator for the $825,000 downtown streetscape project.

City officials blame Clark, Roamelis and Associates, known as CRA, for failing to secure state approval for the proposed landscaping and sidewalk modifications around the 1912 Historic Courthouse. The lack of state review indefinitely delayed the streetscape project last August, and City Manager Frank DiGiovanni estimated it could take another 11/2 to 3 months to receive the state's permission to move forward. Using a $600,000 grant from the state and a $225,000 local match, the city plans to add wider sidewalks, more landscaping, imitation brick crosswalks and old-fashioned street lamps to the downtown. DiGiovanni said the city will negotiate with Berryman & Henigar to carry the project forward, and may pursue legal action against CRA to recoup the city's expenses and ensure the project's subcontractors are paid.
