CCHEA FEBRUARY MEETING: Citrus Christian Home Educators Association (CCHEA) invites teachers, parents, fellow homeschoolers and students to meet at 6:30 p.m. Feb. 19 at Providence Baptist Church in Lecanto. There will be a question and answer time for new members from 6 to 6:30 p.m. Special guest speaker, Brad Voeller, the author of Accelerated Distance Learning, will present the up-to-date and effective methods for accelerated distance learning. Citrus Christian Home Educators Association (CCHEA) is a support group for Christian homeschool families, offering monthly meetings, a monthly newsletter, special guest speakers, and a variety of activities for its students. GETTING STARTED: Central Florida Community College is offering a one hour free "Getting Started" session to provide information on topics like financial aid resources and testing requirements for those interested in going to or returning to college from 6:30-7:30 p.m. Feb. 19 in Building 2, Room 103 at the Citrus County Campus in Lecanto (3800 S. CFCC FILM SERIES: The Central Florida Community College Film Series will present Guimba the Tyrant on Feb. 19. Two screenings are scheduled: 2 p.m. in the Appleton Museum of Art Auditorium and 7 p.m. in the CFCC Ocala Campus Building 8, Room 110 Auditorium. Coffee will be available for purchase before the Appleton Museum screening. The screening is free, but donations are welcome. Screenings at the Appleton Museum of Art in Ocala are free to museum members and Film Series members, and require museum admission for all others. BLACK HISTORY MONTH EVENTS: Central Florida Community College's African-American Student Union is presenting a series of events celebrating Black History Month. All events will be held on the college's Ocala Campus: Black History Facts Showcase will be on display through Feb. 15 in the Bryant Union (Building 5) lobby; Zora Live, a journey through the life of author Zora Neale Hurston featuring Phyllis McEwen will be part of the Office of Student Leadership Development Speaker Series noon-1 p.m. Wednesday, in Building 4 Auditorium; "Voices of Freedom" with Dr. Irvin Brown will be presented from noon-1 p.m. Feb. 18 in Building 8, Room 104; the Culinary Arts Learning Institute will hold a Mini-Soul Food Festival at lunchtime Feb. 19 in the Bryant Union cafeteria; A Family Fun Day, featuring David Griffin, Florida State Lottery secretary, will be presented by the Educational Opportunity Center at 2:30 p.m. Feb. 23 in Building 4 Auditorium; "An Evening with Tenor William Brown," the tenor who performs in Amistad concerts as the replica slave ship visits American ports, will be held at 6 p.m. Feb. 24 in Building 4 Auditorium; Staff and Student Inspirational Readings and Songs will be held from noon to 1 p.m. Feb. 28 in the Bryant Union, Room 104. WTI OFFERS HEALTH CARE COURSE: In association with Withlacoochee Technical Institute, Experience Works/Green Thumb Inc. is offering an 11-week Patient Care Assistant, Certified Nurse's Assistant and Home Health Aide course. This course will be held at WTI in Inverness five days a week, six hours a day, starting in March. To qualify, participants must be 55 or older and meet income requirements. The course includes free tuition, books and uniforms. High school diploma not required. For information, call Experience Works/Green Thumb Inc. at 726-5477. FAMILY FUN SING ALONG: Jack Hartmann, nationally recognized children's singer, songwriter and author, will be at Forest Ridge Elementary School for the Family Fun Sing Along at 7 p.m. Feb. 26. The program will include his songs such as, Alligator Chomp, The Hip Hop Hokey Pokey, Ollie the Otter and Be the Best You Can Be. CRHS COUPON BOOKS: The Crystal River High School Band Boosters 18th annual Suncoast Restaurant Entertainment Sampler coupon book, sponsored by the Suncoast Better Business Federation Inc., is now available for $29.95. This fundraiser helps the CRHS band boosters raise funds for music, equipment and instruments. The coupon book offers 79 coupons for restaurants and 37 coupons for entertainment and golfing facilities throughout Citrus County and surrounding areas. For information or to order a coupon book, call Stephanie Price at 563-5422 after 6 p.m. NEW GED PROGRAM: The newest version of the GED, GED 2002, has been released this month. Testing will begin in Citrus County in February at the Withlacoochee Technical Institute. This revamped version of the test comes with many changes. Examinees will notice more updated work force related questions and colorful graphics in the test booklets. Three sections will have fewer questions and a scientific calculator will be permitted for one of the two mathematics sections. Examinees must be 18 years or older. Applicants must attend a GED orientation prior to taking the test, which will include registration, paying of fees, and an introduction to the scientific calculator. Applicants will be scheduled for the next available GED test at orientation. Examinees are encouraged to enroll in free GED Preparation classes scheduled at WTI and other locations throughout Citrus County. Prep classes allow students to practice on the scientific calculator and the opportunity to be able to take the GED practice test and get one-on-one instruction. Applicantions are now being accepted for the next GED orientation. Testing space is limited. Applicants are first-come, first served.
