Students at Pope John Paul II Catholic School who recently participated in a speech contest were asked: "What was the topic you chose for your speech?"

SARAH PARROW, 9, FOURTH GRADE: "I picked the title 'My Journey in the Past.' It was about how my grandma and mom lived in Poland a long time ago. Everything's a lot different there from here."

STEVE GEIER, 10, FOURTH GRADE: "I talked about my dog, Major. He's a chocolate Labrador retriever and he's one of my best friends."

GABY SULLO, 12, SIXTH GRADE: "I chose to do 'The Meanest Mother in the World.' I described how some things parents do may seem mean to kids, but what they're really doing is helping them."

REBECCA SAPIENZA, 11, SIXTH GRADE: "My speech was on sea turtles, and I explained how people should help protect the environment by helping to protect the sea turtles."
