TEXTBOOK GIVEAWAY: The Hernando County School District will offer a retired textbook and media material giveaway to the public from 9 a.m. to noon Feb. 15 at the school distribution center at 8050 Mobley Road in Brooksville. Those wishing to participate are advised to bring their own bags to carry their books home.

CHOCACHATTI ELEMENTARY: The school will hold a parent orientation night on the following days: Friday at 4:30 p.m., Feb. 14 at 6 p.m. and Feb. 28 at 7 p.m. For information, call 797-7067.

SUNCOAST ELEMENTARY: The school advisory council will meet 6 p.m. Feb. 14 in the media center.

SPRINGSTEAD HIGH: The Springstead Band Boosters will have a silent auction Feb. 16 beginning at 5:30 p.m. in the cafeteria. Admission is free and prize tickets will be sold at the door. For information, call 797-7010, ext. 407.

ACTIVE PARENTING WORKSHOPS: The Exceptional Student Education program is sponsoring a series of parent workshops dealing with child behavior at locations throughout the county during the school year. The six-week sessions are free to everyone, but registration in advance is required due to seating limitations. For information, call Doris Gero at 797-7022.

WEST HERNANDO CHRISTIAN: The school will have a spaghetti dinner and talent show fundraiser Saturday at First United Methodist Church in Spring Hill. Dinner will be served from 5 to 6:30 p.m. with the talent show following at 7. For information, call 688-9918.

PARROTT MIDDLE: The school advisory committee meets at 6 p.m. Feb. 25 in the media center.

SCIENCE FAIR: The Hernando County Regional Science and Engineering Fair for middle and high school students is taking place through Friday at the SNJP Club, 13383 County Line Road near Masaryktown. Public viewing of the exhibits will be from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday.

NEWSMAKERS: Six Hernando teachers recently received national certification by the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards. Those teachers include: Rachael Griffin (Eastside Elementary), Patricia Johnston (Parrott Middle), Michelle Keith (Westside Elementary), Danna Patterson (Suncoast Elementary), Sharol Uribe (Eastside Elementary) and Rachelle Yungmann (Spring Hill Elementary).
