Doing what comes naturally

Bobby Lyle may not be a household name, but the guy has been playing piano since he was 6, and boy, this cat can play. Lyle did a stint playing keyboards with Sly and the Family Stone back in the mid-1970s, later toured with George Benson and during the 1980s was musical director to none other than the Divine Miss M: yes, Bette Midler. (Lyle was nominated for an Emmy for his work on Midler's Diva Las Vegas.)

A contemporary jazz specialist, Lyle is a much sought-after musical arranger, called upon by the likes of Anita Baker and Al Jarreau. But, at heart, he's still just the son of a church organist, who delights in playing his own piano.

Bobby Lyle performs his "Hot and Cool Jazz Sounds" at 9 p.m. today and 9 p.m. Friday at Famous Cigars Jazz Lounge, 25032 U.S. 19 N, Clearwater. Admission is $10. (727) 796-2442.
